Monday 04, A light breeze gets up during the night bringing with it a bit of scattered cloud, pop out onto the deck just after 4, still plenty of stars about so lets go driving, to start the morning the gentle breeze continues but by around 7 or so it’s just short of gale
force and is now icy cold to. We started at the top of the airstrip and slowly worked our way round, hide, down to double and big then up to sand and along wildebeest drive for the rhino pan area, and all we have to show for the morning is impala and more
impala. It’s pretty miserable by this stage and we would have headed for HWE but I have a meeting with Mario at 8,30 so time to head for the office, taking mashatu drive and then up snake alley, onto buff plains 3, where we bump into a pride of 8 lion, a lion, lioness x 2 and five cubs/s/a, all in tip top condition, they wander down the road for awhile before drifting off in the direction of sand dam maybe. Great sighting. Leaving the office we spot 5 giraffe on the mica hillside and of course more impala along the e/e as well as two troops of baboon along the railway line road. Good morning.
Wednesday 06, A crystal clear morning and winter is definitely here, icy icy cold morning with a equally cold breeze blowing, jerseys, coats, gloves, beenies and scarves a must. First up a
beautiful civet trots down the road for some way before veering off into the bush. Wherethe members way meets the e/e road to wild dog, 2 very impressive lion, cross the road ahead and disappear down in the direction of the Olifants, I decide to back track along madrid as far as unit 70 in the hope they may come through or the rest of the pride maybe down there, but no sign of either, so I continue back and run along pels loop, finding the odd impala and a couple of troops of baboon, take the road for the office, all quiet at idube, up kudu drive and down the short and along the palm for warthog, plenty of impala about but the cold and icy wind they are for the most part all tucked away in the woodlands surrounding the open areas, and it’s only
later in the morning, around 10,30 or so that they start to venture out on to the open plains. Besides the impala, seven kudu, just before hide dam, feeding along the drainage line. While enjoying breakfast at hide, just in front of the landy I watch the never ending flow of quelea coming into drink. a lone fish eagle is at hide catching the warm sun, a couple of troops of baboon on the railway line road, waiting for the 12,30 to Hoedies and just before the sliding gate an elephant bull, who plays a bit of hide and seek with me before moving off.
Thursday 07, Another stunning morning, if anything even colder than yesterday morning, the only plus, no breeze. Game wise, a herd of elephant, crossing the road just before the top the airstrip, later on another herd along zebra way, some distance from the road and 5 wildebeest under the 4 pylons at the sand natural pan crossing, for the rest impala impala, here more there less, more out in the open because of the lack of any wind and that’s the drive.
Friday 08, Same again this morning, crystal clear and icy cold, just another wonderful morning. Game viewing much the same as the last few days, plenty of impala about of course add to that a
herd of seven wildebeest and three zebra. Still on the 4 pylons and closer to rhino, a bull elephant, a large herd of impala and a lone zebra.
Saturday 09, Just another glorious winters morning, we stop off at the top of the airstrip for awhile, listen out, see if the bush can tell us anything, before heading down to warthog, as usual
plenty of impala about, some have even ventured out of the woodland in spite of the icy cold, we head up mamba way and then north along the e/e before heading down along M&M’s road, and on the flood plains, impala, a couple of waterbuck and 3 giraffe, all quiet at idube so onto the causeway, a couple of troops of baboons, on either side of the river, we continue along pels, monkeys and a special sighting of a Peregrine Falcon, not often seen around this part of the world. We are on our way up pels pass when lion are called in at wild dog, we take the road along madrid and then up to WD and are in time to catch them crossing the road and moving into thick bush, both look pretty full. We move over to the sable area, first going along the single pylons across the palm and then along hyena way for the wallows and along mashatu drive, plenty of impala on the plains a above the wallows, at rhino pan , a python lying just above the water line. We take the road onto the 4 pylons and then the link road onto wildebeest drive, arriving at sand, there are just impala everywhere we looked, always impressive in large herds, then onto natural pan, an elephant herd are slowly making their way down towards big, nothing about at big but as usual plenty of impala about at the link road between bateleur and ingwe, double is also quiet but on the way upto star crossing, we spot an elephant bull feeding some way off the road, through jackal plains and down to hide and more impala about as there are along mala lane for the rwlr and then up to Geoff’s table where we enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast before returning to the top of the airstrip and then home. Most mornings are usually very quiet once we have passed through the sliding gate but this morning we see plenty of game, besides impala, two families of warthogs and a group, neck?? not sure what their herd name is, 9 giraffe, great way to end a beautiful morning with great and unusual spots.
Sunday 10, Another beautiful day to end whats been a busy week. We will be away for the next couple of weeks, so the next drive will hopefully come out early July. You all take care now.
