Wednesday 27, Well here we are back on Olifants after a couple of weeks in Sabie, man
it’s cold there, doggie sitting for Thomas & Jacqui while they were away in KZN. Special drive this morning as most of our family are with us and it’s Wayne’s 50th birthday. We enjoy some good sightings, plenty of impala about as usual and in particular an enormous herd on buff plains 3, some elephant along zebra drive moving away in the direction of sand/nkhonkoni dams, 5 kudu bulls along mala lane and we join unit 79 at
the base of hide dam and then along the dry watercourse that comes down from sand, 2 lioness and 3 s/a cubs, difficult to be sure just what pride the are. We enjoy a champs breakfast up at Geoff’s table and across the palm along mala lane another herd of elephant. On our way out impala, zebra and giraffe along the rwlr.
Thursday 28, We miss the morning drive and instead go into Olifants for an evening drive for a change, find plenty of impala scattered about, while we are in the rhino pan area, two wild dog are called in, running along the e/e road close to Bev’s bench, we decide to head for warthog pan in the hopes that they will go down to the water, they cut across onto the parallel clearing/ airstrip area followed by a whole string of cars, going backwards and forwards trying to keep up with them, finally they disappear and then 3 lioness are called in from the top of the airstrip, we are just about to set off to jointhe other cars when we hear lion calling off towards buff plains so we opt for that instead and luck is with us and we find 3 lion lying up at the top if buff plains two.
WE end the evening drive with a very exciting spot in HWE right at the turn off to our home, as Wayne is about to turn into the driveway, his headlights pick up a large porcupine, on the edge of the road, facing the bush when suddenly out steps a huge leopard, obviously hunting him, they both move into the bush along side the house and then like the cars after the wild dogs, we try to keep tabs on them both, now you see them now you don’t, in all the excitement and being in a closed car, we really battle to get a good view, eventually the leopard laughs it off, crosses the road behind us and disappears, will include some video of mine and a better one taken by my grand daughter Tae- Marie, anyway it’s sure to give you a good laugh, and hopefully conveying the excitement and frustration of not being able to get a good view.
Friday 29, An overcast morning to start which clears partly during the morning, not a very productive mornings drive, the usual spread of impala about, 3 giraffe near sand dam, 5 kudu bulls along mala lane, we enjoy our breakfast at Q’s corner before heading back to the garages and home.
Saturday 30, A complete change in the weather this am, crystal clear and icy cold but once more a very slow drive, crossing at mikes link, a small herd of elephant, besides that, impala, a herd of kudu on buff plains, 4 giraffe up from sand dam, the big/ double dam area particularly quiet. We meet the Bullen (64) family at Shonalanga while enjoying our breakfast, then back to swap cars and home.
Sunday 01 July 2018, A stunning morning to end the week. Really great to have our whole family here to. You all take care now.
