Tuesday 31, Early morning completely overcast which burns off during the morning. Lex McKenzie and friend Corrina join us for this morning drive and we enjoy a change of fortune. The usual herds of impala all about, 10 kudu bulls on red crested drive, soon
after passing under the single pylons and as we arrive at double we catch 3 lioness and 2 sub adult cubs, just leaving the water. Later on in the morning an elephant herd is seen drinking at hide but by the time we get there they have moved off to the north but we do manage to see them from a distance.
August 01, 2018. A beautiful morning to start the new month, no sign of the lioness’s and cubs around double or big this morning and while searching for them, 3 lion are seen at the borehole pump close to 43 and also a herd of elephant along pels. Besides the usual impala about, a herd of kudu at the bottom of buff plains 2 and at the top of jackal plains I bump into a couple of young elephant bulls, who after inspecting the old bones there,
dig themselves a hole and enjoy a good dust bath, watch their antics while enjoying my breakfast. On my way out, along the railway line road, masses of impala, a herd of 3 zebra and a couple of warthog plus a troop of baboon. The pic of the crested barbet taken at hide, he/she is part of a huge flock of birds, who had mobbed a verreaux eagle owl, who is tucked away in the thick foliage on the island
August 02, A strong wind gets up during the night and we are in two minds whether to go into Olifants at all but after a short dicussion we decide that in spite of the wind, what better place to celebrate 55 years than in our favourite place with a delicious breakfast, champagne and good friends, Mario and Meagan, plus Saba of course, at two trees, and as it turns out by the time we start breakfast the wind has died to a gentle breeze. Game wise, an elephant bull close to hide, 3 more at big dam, a special or rare sighting of 9 wildebeest on wildebeest plains, a couple of giraffe on fungwe drive, one in particular, very old, 3 zebra along our cutline with venice and of course impala all about, a large herd between big and double another around hide dam and a monster herd on buff plains 2, literally from top to bottom, just surprising there aren’t more predators about. Make it home just on one after a great morning.
Friday 03, Light rain during the night, still softly drizzling in the am, stay home. It clears during the day and turns in a beautiful evening. We are just on our way home from a walk and not far from our house when we spot these 2 giraffe enjoying a joust, they looked great against the setting.
Saturday, No drive.
Monday 06, Cold overcast weather moves in during the night but in spite of the wind and low cloud we pop into Olifants, very little to report, even the impala were scarces, mostly tucked away in the woodland. while having our breakfast down at fig tree grove 7 giraffe drinking and feeding further up stream and that’s the lot for the morning and by evening the wind has died away and it is a beautiful beautiful bush veld evening.
Tuesday 07, A beautiful morning once more, a cloudless sky, not a breath of wind and just that little warmer, winter behind us?? Good general game this morning, plenty of impala out and about, to them add a couple of kudu bulls, 18 giraffe in all, especially along the klaserie cutline, down fungwe drive, tambothi link and near sable dam, 9 wildebeest along wildebeest drive and we catch 6 zebra just leaving big dam. This morning we meet Brian & Claire (56) with friends Louis, Candy, Mickey & Jenny and Mario and Meagan for a delicious champagne breakfast at two trees, we were visited by a ellie bull, in musth, who wasn’t too happy that we were there but fortunately decided to move on with out any drama, setting off down the cutline for home spot a large herd of elephant crossing ahead. Heading in the direction of rhino or maybe sable, we eventually only get a glimpse of them hidden in the bush and then finally at the mahlabetzi crossing we have to go off road to get round a truck carrying out cut up sections of railway line, unfortunately the rig’s horse hasn’t got the power to negotiate the steeper parts of the road, so stuck there unable to go back or forward, last week it jack knifed at the same spot and cars had to go all the way round through ON and out the Gritjie gate.
Wednesday , Away for the rest of the week, You all take care now,
