Wednesday 15, A beautiful clear morning, get some low cloud for a brief while soon clears away and gives us a stunning sun rise.
First up my apologies for the mess up with the lion pictures, not sure what went wrong. We are in early taking the venice cutline turn off, finding the odd impala, we turn down rhino walk for sable, all quiet here as is the mashatu and rhino area, taking the road onto the 4 pylons we find a troop of baboon and couple of giraffe plus a large herd of impala, left onto the link and onto wildebeest drive and down to sand, zip about so across to first big, just a small herd of impala and a giraffe, we take bateleur for double crossing at the link onto ingwe and here plenty of impala, we stop off at double for our breakfast and watch a large herd of impala come into drink followed by a lone jackal and a couple steenbok. On the way to the 4 pylons we find another giraffe and a couple more when we take saba’s road down to hide, then along mala lane, finding 4 kudu cows, right onto the rwlr and then left into neil’s link, spot one of owls then along the palm for the office, finding a further 2 giraffe. Leaving the office we head up mica road for the e/e and we are just shy of the short cut when Briad calls in an unusual sighting, at the steep crossing and across the palm, where the steep rocky part is.A leopard with a kill and next to them, right near the landy a lion is watching the leopard unfortunately by the time we get there the leopard has bolted and the lion has the impala. We continue up to warthog then up the airstrip finding on parallel clearing plenty of impala and a herd 6 kudu cows, then just past Andy’s lookout, some distance from the road a herd of elephant and 3 more giraffes and finally on the rwlr a herd of wildebeest lying up a short distance from the road we count six but could have been more.
Thursday 16, A beautiful morning, icy cold and clear as a bell. Instead of turning right and heading for sable or left on members way we keep on the railway line all the way to the palm and then go left along for mike’s link, just a few impala about, right down along
river drive the bottom of the airstrip and then we head for the second crossing and before we get there 3 hyena come trotting down mamba lane and then cross over to the pan, drink and move off in the direction of Geoff’s table. We head down the palm loop, no sign of either the lion or leopard from yesterday but a large herd of impala on serengeti plains, back along the rwlr and along to nkhonkoni dam, all quiet , so up through buff plains, finding impala here and there, the sable, rhino pan area pretty quiet, some impala and a couple of giraffe along the road to 4 pylons. We miss lisbon as there was an anti poaching excerise around big dam. Meet Brian and Claire for breakfast at Geoff’s table and spot a large herd of elephant off towards sand and thats the drive.
Friday 17, Another crystal clear morning, not as nippy as yesterday. As we arrive at the mahlabetzi crossing spot hundreds of vultures just off the road, sitting in all the dead trees, too far off the road to see who killed what unfortunately but after crossing the river , we find one hyena trotting up the road and across the tracks, another 2 keeping pace, the one soon crosses and they all disappear into drifters. WE turn right at the venice cutline and then take the single pylons to the road for sable, bump into Brian and Claire, briefly before they head up the single pylons and we continue onto sable, all quiet so we take the top road, opposite rhino pan then onto the 4 pylons and finally up the klaserie cutline, we find a few impala, a couple of giraffe, more giraffe and impala down fungwe drive and the Brian and Claire once more for breakfast at big, and as it warms up more and more impala slowly drift into drink. Time to make for home, they head off to the office, we head south along the 4 pylons right down to sand, plenty of impala about, then across to buff plains 2 & 3, down snake alley, more impala, and past sable, impala and 5 kudu cows and then on the rwlr, impala and 4 giraffe.
Saturday 18, Absolutely foul day, gale force wind from the south, we stay home.
Sunday 19, The wind has dropped but still heavy overcast and just a spit and a spot of rain during the night. That’s the lot. You all take care now.
