Monday 03 September 2018, September already, a beautiful morning with just a bit of very high cirrus about and the last bit of nip in the air, especially crossing the mahlabetzi. Game wise this am, plenty of impala about particularly around sand dam, coming into drink from every direction, 4 kudu bulls, in the palm loop just before we reach the rwlr and we count 15 giraffe on the drive, spread out on Olifants and along the rwlr as we head back to HWE , the knob thorns are in full bloom and the giraffe are really enjoying the blossom. The most exciting news is of course the opening of a new road, starting at the rwlr, and hyena way, just before the palm. The road forks right and then follows, as closely as possible, the palm loop all the way to the view point, under the single pylons, from there it stays with the palm to just before Q’s corner where it follows the drainage line up to sable dam and then crosses the drainage line and joins the road to Q’s corner, what a wonderful addition to our road network. I have taken a video to give you some idea of what its like, Enjoy.
Wednesday 05, A beautiful morning once more, not too cold, summer definitely on it’s way. First up, on our way in a herd of elephant, feeding along the RWLR, just short of our
cutline with Venice. We find plenty of impala around rhino, sand dam, and 8 wildebeest coming into drink, more impala between big and double. We are just parking at big when a very large herd of elephant, we count at least 120, come into drink, very quiet and most of them make for the outlet pipe before moving further along the dam,
have our breakfast and enjoy some really great viewing. Going down to the office 4 impressive kudu bulls and a couple of nyala close to the office. Pop into say cheers to Mario and Meagan, as they are off on Friday to their home in CT for some well deserved leave. On our way out take the palm loop drive so we can drive the new section at the bottom of serengeti, absolutely super. Then through warthog up the air strip and on the RWLR 6 giraffe, that’s the morning.
Monday 10, An crystal clear morning but icy cold and I mean icy, just like being back in june. To start not much about but as it sort of warms up more and more game appears out of the woodland, from the our cutline with Venice I head up the single pylons going right along the new drive all the way to sable, nothing about, all quiet around rhino as well, I back track along mashatu way and then up snake alley and down through buff plains 2, here I find my first herd of impala and a couple of warthog. Nothing about at nkhonkoni so onto hide, all quiet here to so upto jackal plains and here there are plenty of impala, 8 wildebeest and a troop of baboon. By this time a icy cold breeze has sprung up from the south so any thoughts of it warming up are delayed. Double is quiet, because there are a couple of APU guys sitting under a bush close to the water, move onto big along ingwe, cross at the link onto bateleur and stop of for breakfast, a lone hippo in the water. Gets a touch warmer so the first impala start to come into drink. Make my way towards sand, plenty of impala around natural pan and 2 giraffe, another 3 close to sand plus masses of impala coming into drink, I continue along kudu loop for hide once more, plenty of impala about this time, along mala lane, a couple of kudu and another troop of baboon, through neil’s link and along the new road, at the bottom of serengeti plains, gives you great viewing into the palm. Warthog has a giraffe, troop of baboons, and plenty of impala, I stay with the river drive and at mike’s link a herd of elephant, onto hyena way, right along the new drive all the way to the single pylons and then head for home.
Wednesday 12, Icy cold start to the morning, first up, my lights pick up 3 hyena trotting
down the road just before the mahlabetzi crossing. Turn off at the cutline with venice and find the sable and rhino very quiet this morning take the new road all along the palm, manage a couple of duiker and it’s not till I get to warthog that I start seeing many more impala and a herd of elephant, feeding on the edge of the open area. Continue down the
palm then up the short cut, impala and a herd of 4 kudu, down kudu drive and past idube, all quiet, find a large troop of baboon crossing the causeway and another troop on pels, stop off at the pels lay-by for breakfast, watch a pair of gypo’s with two different age groups of goslings, so are there two hatchings or did some of them hatch late??? Experts options please. Then back down past warthog, in the hopes the elephant may be at the water, no luck, so across to nkhonkoni, impala, over to sand, impala, 4 giraffe and 4
zebra all slowly coming into drink, I take wildebeest road for rhino, go right on the plains, 3 kudu bulls on one of the termite mounds, and again right along zebra way, left down snake alley, I cross at the rubbing post, the young martial is at the nest, I continue past sable dam once more finding alot of impala and a couple of giraffe.
Sunday 16, The end of another week, I do apologies for the topsy turvy reports over the last two weeks but we’ve been away, so very much low key. Hopefully next week will be more productive. You all take care now.
