Tuesday 18, No doubt summer on its way, a clear but very mild morning with the promise of it turning into a really hot day. My cousin David and friend Freda are with us for the week so are off into Olifants nice and early. Owners and friends will already
know that early this last Saturday morning we very sadly lost another rhino, this time right at nkhonkoni dam, so once having changed to the landy, we make our way there,
the carcass is up the dry river bed from the dam and, well the pics and video tell the story. It’s the E/E Pride 3 lionesses plus 2 cubs and it looks like the cubs are both female
We then cross over to hide, finding the odd impala about and a small flock of cattle egrets sitting in one of the trees, upto jackal plains, impala, the double/ big dam area has plenty of impala at, and between the two dams, as well as a large troop of baboon close to big, we head back to the 4 pylons and sand dam and find 4 kudu bulls, a couple of giraffe plus, hundreds of impala streaming in to drink from every direction, take wildebeest drive for rhino, more impala and kudu close to the dam, find more along mashatu drive. We stop off for a delicious breakfast at Q’s corner before heading along the new drive all the way to the rwlr, plenty of impala close to the palm, cross mike’s link and up to the garages and home.
Friday 22, A cool overcast morning, unfortunately a short week as I have been down with flu, which has meant David and Freda have had to entertain themselves but we do manage a drive into Olifants this morning, after changing to the landy we head off down
to warthog and then along the palm, finding the odd impala about and a couple of giraffe, across to the office and we make for the grootdraai and at idube pan a couple of young elephant bulls. While we are watching them a whole herd appears coming down from the top of the hill and amongst them is a mum and the teeniest baby, stopping behind some bushes she allows the little one to feed, just couldn’t get a reasonable shot of them both out in the open, look carefully and you’ll see her drinking. Continue down to pels, a couple of waterbuck, troop of baboon and a pair of bushbuck. Past the airstrip and along to mike’s link and onto the new road all the way to sable, herds of impala here and there, a couple of kudu bulls under the single pylons and as there is plenty of blossom on the knob thorns we spot a number giraffe feeding from them, also out at the moment are the bright yellow Sjambok Pod flowers, dotted about everywhere. We head up snake alley, more impala, through buff plains 3 and 2 and down to nkhonkoni and you would never know there had ever been a dead rhino, just a few bones scattered about, mother natures expert cleaners had been at work. Onto Geoff’s table and then home.
Hopefully will be back to normal next week. You all take care now.
