Monday 15, A beautiful mild morning to start the week, Peter & Pam Wise, good friends from Umhlali are with us for this morning drive. We swap cars and then head down to mike’s link and along first hyena way and then the new road all the way to sable dam,
here we enjoy the young martial eagle, seems to be moving further and further from home. Now over the week end a giraffe carcass was found on boy boys road so head up
past sable and are lucky enough to spot 4 hyena and a couple of jackal. Back tracking we pass sable dam once more and continue past Q’s corner and along mashatu drive for rhino pan, finding impala and a herd of 8 zebra, up to the 4 pylons then right and almost immediately onto the new road which takes you all the way to the klaserie cutline and head north, at the turn off to our next new road we find a large herd of impala and we continue all the way back to the 4 pylons, finding more impala, a couple of hogs and crossing over we make for sand dam and as before just masses of impala making their way down to sand for a drink , with them a couple of kudu as well as two giraffe and one lone wildebeest bull. We take the road back up to the 4 pylons, past natural pan and down to big, impala and a couple of impressive kudu bulls, down to double first on bateleur and then ingwe, impala of course and 2 more giraffe plus a herd of 4 kudu cows, at double more impala and we join the rusermi cut line take a right at the short cut which takes you tambothi link and two trees where we enjoy a delicious breakfast. By the time we are ready to leave it’s already pretty hot so we take as short a route as possible for the top of the airstrip, so back past big, masses of impala coming into drink, sand dam, still plenty of impala about along kudu loop for hide dam, here 6 kudu amongst all the impala and a short way down mala lane a couple more giraffe, through neil’s link and along the palm for warthog where there are impala dotted about plus another 4 kudu cows and 3 more giraffe. Swap cars and at the malhabetzi crossing, a couple hundreds metres down stream, a herd of elephant complete our drive.
Wednesday 17. A cool overcast morning, it tries very hard to rain, but just a spit and a spot here and there and by mid morning more and more blue around. Not a great deal to report besides the lion on warthog pan, we are way off in the area of 2 trees when Glen calls them in, 5 Lion and a Lioness, so by the time we get there they have moved off and we only see 2 lying up across the palm, these 5 lion are apparently the Maseke males, one can only hope that our E/E pride with the two small cubs, keep them well hidden, cause they will make short work of those two little ones. For the rest of the drive 6 giraffe at double dam, impala between double and big , more around sand dam but not much about what with the weather cold and a sort of misty type of drizz. On members way we spot a herd of 7 kudu and a couple of more giraffe on the rail road. Later in morning the lion at warthog make a kill.
Monday 22, A beautiful morning when we leave the house, but by the time we get to Olifants, a icy wind has got up and plenty of low cloud starts moving in, so not a very pleasant mornings drive, except for a small herd of 7 elephants on the railway road, the rest of the general game we do find is tucked away in the woodland, just near the garage a couple of giraffe and a herd of impala, we head down to pels, some impala and a troop of monkeys, all quiet at idube and so is kudu drive, find some impala and 4 kudu on the short cut , along the palm towards warthog, just the odd impala about, then across to first nkhonkoni, all quiet, then on down to hide where we find a couple of kudu bulls, just leaving the dam and a couple of hippo. It really is mizz so we decide to have our breakfast here before heading down to the office to grab some fuel then back along the E/E where find more impala, a waterbuck bull, two more giraffe and a herd of kudu, just before we get to the garages.
Friday 26, A clear balmy morning and by mid morning pretty hot, not a great deal to report, the usual quiet start but as it warms more impala appear making their way down to the various waterholes for a drink, so plenty of them around hide, big, double, sand and both rhino and sable, 4 impressive kudu bulls along mashatu drive, giraffe along the palm after the short cut. A lone hyena lying up near the new road that runs from the klaserie cutline to the 4 pylons and a wild cat on the main road close to the office. Taking mica road when we head back for the garages, we find 5 waterbuck, impala and a couple of giraffe near the E/E road, that’s the lot.
You all take care now. R&T, N&M 🐘🐘🐘
