Monday 05, A cool morning with some high cirrus about starts the new week, after the usual swap we head down the airstrip for warthog, some impala and a giraffe on parallel clearing, all quiet on warthog so we take the road down the palm loop and just before the
steep crossing we bump into the E/E pride coming the other way, we back off the road and turn and follow them onto warthog, where they soon move down and across the palm loop and head off towards the e/e and we continue our drive, across to nkhonkoni, finding a flock of mostly yellow billed storks with a couple of spoonbills as well. Last evening a pair of mating leopards were seen at the water but in spite of a careful search no sign of them. We continue onto hide dam and find plenty of impala and 8 giraffe, we then take mama lane and back along the single pylons in the hope that the leopards may have come through on the drainage line, no luck, so we go back to warthog and then along the river drive to mikes link and onto the new road for sable dam, along here plenty of impala, a couple more giraffe and herd of 6 kudu, just the odd impala about sable dam and at rhino more impala and a large hippo in the water, much later in the morning a pride of 7 lion are seen at the water at rhino. We take the road to the four
pylons and then the new link onto the klaserie cutline, find plenty more impala and 4 more giraffe, so down fungwe drive for big and again impala and just before the dam, a wildebeest and 5 zebra. We find more impala along badger blvd and around double another giraffe. We head back up to the four pylons and we stay with red crested drive all the way to our e/e and then along to the garages, pockets of impala and 4 waterbuck.
Tuesday 06, 23 deg. at 5 am, lots of high cloud cover about and for awhile it looks like we are in for a massive storm, although it doesn’t clear around mid morning we get enough to wet the roads and keep the dust down lets hope it keeps going all afternoon and
through the night. First up this morning, I follow a civet down the road for a couple of hundred metres before he ducks off, just before the sliding gate. After the car swap I head off in the direction if the sable/rhino pan area, see if that pride of lion are still about, spend sometime trying to find their tracks or them but no such luck. At this time in the
morning, just the odd impala about so after passing sable dam once more, past the wallows and up snake alley and through buff plains 2 for nkhonkoni, here I find more impala, a herd of 8 kudu and a couple of giraffe, then across to sand. Then I take wildebeest road for a short while before taking the new road to the 4 pylons and across and all the way to the klaserie cutline. Left down fungwe for big, plenty of impala about, decide to have my breakfast here and after about 45 minutes, silently like ghosts a herd of 24 elephants, come quietly past me and go round to the west side to drink and then just as silently drift off up fungwe drive, special. I continue down to double, pretty warm in spite of the cloud cover and so plenty of impala at the water and coming into drink. Up to
the 4 pylons and all the way south to rhino pan once more, at the water, impala, a family of 5 warthog and a couple of zebra, just impala on mashatu but once I take the new road from sable dam, plenty of impala, 4 kudu bulls and along both sides of the palm, below the new table, enjoying the flowering knob thorns giraffe, I count 12 in all, further down stream more impala and another couple of kudu bull. From the garages to the sable crossing another 7 giraffe, great mornings drive.
Wonderful rain during the night, not a great deal, around 15mms but soft and soaking, the bush washed clean and sparkling in the early morning sun and a cool breeze from the south. Later in the morning lots of fluffy white clouds come floating in from the south, maybe more rain tonight. Game wise not much to report, impala mostly tucked away in the woodlands, keeping a sharp lookout for the first baby impala of the season but no luck so far. Giraffe are here and there, couple around rhino, 3 more along the single pylons road, around double I count another 3 and close to The garages 2 more. Leaving the office heading for mica road on the flood plains 5 waterbuck all lying up in the old thatch, on mica, a herd of 4 kudu plus one more giraffe.
Sunday 11, that’s the lot. You all take care now.
