Monday 26, It’s a clear morning and already 29 deg’s when we leave the house, so it’s going to be a hot one, by the time we leave Olifants the temp has moved into the upper 30’s.
Swap cars and head off down to mikes link and then onto the new road along the palm called Molope drive, just before the new picnic table 3 hyena, one lying in the road, the
other 2 scrounging around, they all move off in a southerly direction, we continue onto sable, all quiet, Q’s corner and then along mashatu drive for rhino, where we find a
hippo, been here for a few days now and a large herd of impala coming into drink. We take wildebeest drive and bump 3 zebra and 3 giraffe, impala and kudu at sand , we continue on and turn right onto Bongani’s rd, joining the road from natural pan down to big. Although around 6,30 we decide to park here and wait to see what comes into drink, plenty of impala from all direction, 5 kudu cows come into drink on the western bank and across the water 5 kudu bulls come and drink, giraffe and warthogs also amble in, we
hear elephant trumpeting in the distance but instead of coming into big we catch them later on just short of double, more impala here and a couple of giraffe, as there is no borehole feed at double there’s more mud than water, so rain is needed soon. We take the road onto the 4 pylons then all the way along red crested drive to the railway road, passing impala, a couple more kudu and another giraffe, office and then back to the garages .
Thursday 29, We were hoping to go into Olifants but we awake to a very cold and very windy morning, so stay home, but good news though, during the night we get some rain, a couple of storms roll over us, leaving 15 mms on the estate and 10 mms on Olifants, not
much but lets hope more is on the way. So while we were sitting on our deck this morning, enjoying breakfast this little bit of action took place, a dark chanting goshawk swooped in and took a squirrel from amongst all the birds, feeding below the bird tray.
Friday30, Beautiful morning to start, what remains of the moon and plenty of stars but by the time we get to the garages a huge bank of cloud has moved in from the west and it
soon turns cold but fortunately no wind. Except for a herd of 27 elephant, that come into drink at big while we enjoying a cuppa, the little guy keeping us amused, obviously not too sure about the water, there’s very little else to report, impala here and there, still no babies about, a couple of giraffe near sand, 4 kudu on mashatu drive but on the way out, along the rail road, a number of impala herds, 2 small herds of kudu, 4 and 5 and 4
giraffe at the mahlabetzi. That ends the week.
You all take care now and pray for rain.
