Monday 28, Heavy overcast morning, nice and cool, no rain but it sort of clears up during the day, have had nice rain over the weekend. A very quiet drive this am, even the impala are scarces and in fact we see more game on our way out than on our drive. As I say, very slow, impala here and there, couple of giraffe on buff plains two, a kudu cow along mashatu, troop of baboons on the 4 pylons near rhino pan, but on our way home, plenty of impala, before and after the sliding gate, 4 different troops of baboons, all waiting for the 10,30 from Phalaborwa, just before the gate, 5 giraffe, and a small herd of waterbuck. We do spot two of our most favourite eagles though. With the heavy overcast not the best clearest pics.
Wednesday 30. Weather wise almost a carbon copy of yesterdays, game viewing almost the same as well, impala and a couple of zebra at the bottom of the airstrip and across on warthog, plenty of more impala. I head off in the direction of mike’s link and then onto molope dr, across the palm and along hyena way I can see plenty of impala, passing the new picnic sight and on sable plains, some impala but a great sighting of a secretary bird, sometime since I seen one on olifants, past sable dam, all quiet, take the short cut across to rhino, just the odd impala about, back track to mashatu dr, up snake alley for buff plains, find a small flock Amur Falcons, taken a stand in a dry tree, nice, for those who don’t know, the plain grey front is the male and the other the female, I go right onto zebra, then through wildebeest plains, impala dotted about, right onto mpisi dr. all the way onto the klaserie cutline, left and I take the tamboti link turn off and at 2 trees, a enormous herd of impala, continue down to big, zip about, so along bateleur for double, except for the 3 hippo, zip about as well, head onto the 4 pylons and then on down to hide, just the odd impala about, enjoy my breakfast here before heading down to the office. I take palm drive to warthog, passing the odd impala and a troop of baboon and at warthog a lone elephant bull, that completes the drive.
Friday 1, February 2019, Weather has been the same all week, holding off on the rain
though, may get lucky over the week end. Car swop and like I usually do, park at the top of the runway and listen out to what the bush can tell me, all quiet this am, head down to warthog, impala, kudu and zebra on parallel clearing, plenty more impala and a small herd of 4 zebra at the the start of the palm drive, all quiet on serengeti but a nice herd of impala on the clearing at the bottom of the short cut. I’m nearly at the office road when Louise calls in the pack of wild dog on kudu loop, so away I go, cross the railroad and all
the way to the 4 pylons along red crested drive and then south, Louise advises me to
duck in along bongani’s as she’s lost them for the moment, but then comes back and says they’ve come back to sand , so then it’s back and forward up to the 4 pylons and back to sand for the next hour or more and in the process manage to make one or maybe two kills, 20 dogs in all, one still carrying a collar. enjoy the pics. I eventually move off for rhino pan area, finding a large herd of impala at rhino pan plus a couple of giraffe,
decide to enjoy a late breakfast at Q’s corner , bump into a leguaan, (monitor lizard) slowly ambling towards the table, and in his own time leaves the road. Then along molope dr. for the top of airstrip, impala here and there and another giraffe. The pic of the two tawny eagles is at sand above the dogs, hoping to get lucky.
Sunday 3, On Friday evening we were privileged to attend the showing of the movie STROOP, at the Rhino Hall, here in Hoedspruit, This movie, 2 hours in length, chronicles the story of rhino poaching, a story of evil, corruption and cruelty beyond imagination but HOPE as well. It has won awards all over the world and I urge you to make every effort to see it and support it.
Finally, to end the week. I have been asked lately where Morag is, well it’s Marula time and guess what, those bottles of jelly are rolling off the production line, so if you are interested, she is making 3 different tastes this year, Plain, Chilli, and for those who like it even hotter, Habanaro Chilli, so your choice, cell 0828098631 on WhatsApp, as usual supports the Anti poaching Rhino project.
That’s the lot, you all take care now. Roars & Trumpets, Neil & Morag. 🐘🐘🐘
