Monday 27, An absolutely stunning morning and we are across onto olifants north this morning. Leaving the causeway we make our way up stream, finding impala here and there, more impala around aviary road more impala and then along moolmans airstrip 6 giraffe and a herd of 4 waterbuck, we head up pageti link, just the odd impala about, of course it is still pretty lush so spotting not that easy. We continue along klipspringer koppie, across the old airstrip and then left to pebble dam, no water no game, we backtrack up panzi link and stop off at the lookout for our breakfast, enjoy the wonderful views, in all directions. We cross the sedumoni and go left to that beautiful valley and seep (don’t know the name) here we find masses of impala and a herd of 15 kudu, we continue onto the ndlovu area, plenty of impala and a herd of 5 zebra on one side of the dam and another 6 opposite, 4 more kudu. We then make for wildebeest dam along darasandi drive, again impala dotted along the route, all quiet around the dam so head down secret valley road for zebra pan, 3 more giraffe another herd of 8 kudu and more impala of course, up to rock fig junction, past the office, ebony road and onto the causeway, up red duiker drive, airstrip and home. A most enjoyable morning.
Monday June 04 2019. Another beautiful winters morning, on the way in we spot a lone hyena, not far from the mahlabetzi crossing. At the moment, because of the cooler weather we are coming into Olifants in the Landy so there is no need to go all the way to the top of the airstrip, we take a right turn on our cut line and then up the single pylons a small herd of impala, we go right for sable dam, all quiet here so across to rhino, finding more impala, head back along mashatu, past Q’s corner, just the odd impala about and then all along molope dr, sable plains has a few impala and a lone wildebeest and we spot more impala on the open plains along hyena way, we cross the under the railway and through mikes crossing and up on to the airstrip, finding only impala about. We decide to head for pels, so head down hippo way and close to Lawrie,s an elephant, part of a herd that’s deeper in the bush. Along pels some waterbuck and we then cross over onto North, impala on the old runway and a couple more waterbuck, after crossing the runway, we take pageti link then left down tamboti grove, lots of signs of elephant but no sign of them, so back along the river, impala and waterbuck, bump into Graham Benfield, some time since we’ve seen him so catch up on all the news. Back across the causeway, find a large troop of baboons at the water, we take the road up to and past idube, all quiet, then up kudu and right through the new the road that joins red duiker, just the odd impala about, then we head for home.
While on north 2 rhino, both with horns were spotted on the southern cutline between and the sable dam turnoff, they were eventually darted and their horns successfully removed, close to the single pylons, unfortunately being right over on north, by the time we got there it was all done and dusted. Good birds this am, the last pic of the eagle??? taken along pels, Roy an ID please.
Friday 07, A cold overcast and windy morning, Morag wisely stays home, so I’m into Olifants on my own for what turns out to be a very quiet morning drive. A couple of elephant bulls along the railway line road on my way in, the odd impala around wild dog
pan, a few more along madrid and around warthog pan. I head over to hide dam, all quiet here so upto jackal plains, find some more impala, down to double, a lone giraffe
bull, comes into drink, I take baterleur drive for big and at the link, a very large herd of impala, more impala below the wall at big, continue unto natural pan, dry now , go left down wozani and right onto mpisi dr. just a few impala as I cross under the 4 pylons, go left along wildebeest drive for rhino and on cheetah plains more impala and a family of 15 warthog, manage to get a pic of some of them before they all charge off. Around rhino, a few impala, along mashatu drive and I stop off at Q’s corner for my breakfast. Winds got stronger and colder, decide to call it a day so along molope drive, south along the single pylons and onto the railway road and home.
To end this weeks blog, a video of some of the birds that enjoy our little waterhole, just off our deck, the variety just unbelievable, barbets, quelea’s, blue waxbills, red faced
mousebirds, sparrows, oxpeckers, arrow marked babblers, hornbills, go away birds, various starlings and doves , firefinches, weavers, and sunbirds, all enjoy the fresh clean water.
