Monday 19, There’s just a slight nip in the air as we set off for Olifants this morning and another beautiful morning it is too. We turn right at the cutline with venice and continue all the way up to the 4 pylons, down the klaserie cutline and then back along the klaserie link for rhino pan. At this early hour, 5,45 it’s just starting to get light and we find nothing at rhino nor along mashatu drive, we cross at the rubbing post past sable dam and along sable plains and here we find our first impala as well as a herd of 10 wildebeest. We take the single pylon rd. disturbing a troop of baboons in one of the pylons, till the old cutline where we go right and then sharp left up snake alley for buff plains 3, just a small herd in the woodlands, along zebra drive, take the link to wildebeest drive, where we bump into the Ryans, after a brief chat we continue along to mpisi dr. and at the turn for wozani’s way we find our first herd of impala.Past natural pan and we stop off at big for a cuppa which eventually turns into breakfast as first the Ryans and then the Makare’s stop by for a chat. The morning is warming up and as it does so more and more impala come in to drink from, all directions. At around 9,30 we start making our way back towards the railway line and home, past natural and then at sand dam we find plenty of impala, kudu, a troop of baboon all coming in to drink, we continue on past nkhonkoni where we find more impala, 4 giraffe, and 6 kudu cows and along buff plains one a herd of 9 more wildebeest. On our way out we pass impala here and there a couple more giraffe and at the sliding gate, a lone bull elephant. As we cross the mahlabetzi we hear a cheetah called in on parallel clearing. Plenty of general game, especially as it warmed up.
Wednesday 21, A heavy bank of clouds are moving away to the east as we set off for Olifants this am and there’s a real nip in the air, almost like winter once more. A very slow drive this am, only impala and besides 8 kudu cows at warthog pan that’s about all . A cold wind springs up from the south, which didn’t help matters. We meet the Ryans and Makare’s on warthog and they have had just as quiet a drive, so that’s it for today.
Friday 23, Another crisp cool morning to start the day. We slip through the tunnel and head up our cutline with Drifters, going right along lion pan drive and ending up at wild dog water hole, finding just the occasional impala, a couple of steenbok and a pair of duiker, we continue along the e/e road to the top of the airstrip , nothing about either on
parallel clearing or warthog pan at this early hour, we cross over at vestak and stop off nkhonkoni dam, again nothing about so we work our way around the 3 buff plains, finding, impala, 3 giraffe and a couple of kudu, we take snake alley for mashatu and after
checking out the sable plains area, just the odd impala and a lone wildebeest on the plains we head across to rhino, here we catch a large herd of impala coming into drink
and with them 5 zebra, they’ve hardly reached the water when something spooks and they’re all gone in a flash and dust. Take wildebeest dr for sand, then turning right up mpisi drive and then left for natural pan, fair amount of impala about. It’s much warmer when we arrive at big and so impala are all making their way in to drink from every direction. along to double on bateleur dr. and the usual impala around the link area. Then up to the 4 pylons, through jackal plains and down to hide, more impala here and a couple of giraffe, along mala lane and onto the railway line road and home. Game wise pretty quiet but some really special bird sightings, starting with the owl chick, which is as usual along the single pylons in the trees along the palm, the 2 hawk eagles on buff plains one, the harrier hawk on buff plains two and the pair of tawny close to big dam
Monday 26, Beautiful morning to start the week, winter definitely on the back burner. We take the cutline road with venice, finding the odd impala before turning left down
rhino walk for sable dam, all quiet at the dam so across to rhino, zip here as well, we take wildebeest drive for sand but then decide to take zebra drive for the buff plains, plenty of impala along the way, we check out the buff plains, more impala dotted about, all quiet at nkhonkoni dam so we head down to hide, more impala and lone giraffe. We miss the lion called in by Sean Ryan, he’s moved off before we can get there but then 4 lioness’s are called in at the start of molope way, we are almost at the railway line road so scoot along and are lucky get brief look at the 4 lioness, before they move off, we are joined by the Ryans and Makare’s, we hang around at the old zozo hut turn off in the hope that they my come through, no luck though. After enjoying breakfast and catching up on various sighting, one special, 3 cheetah. On the way out , impala, 8 giraffe and 3 different troops of baboon. Nice martial on buff plains 2, the 2 tawny’s up from nkhonkoni keeping an eye on their chick.
Thursday 29, Beautiful morning, definitely warmer once more, a quiet drive this morning, the sable area in particular, nothing about but a small herd of impala around rhino pan, we head along zebra way for the buff plains and again just the odd impala here and there, zip at nkhonkoni so we cross to hide and spot a herd of elephant making their way down to the water on either side of saba’s rd. Although we wait at the dam for some time only one elephant comes into drink. We have to move on as we are meeting the Makare’s and Ryans at 2 trees for a farewell champs breakfast as Sean & Carol leave on Friday and Brian & Claire leave for the states on Monday.
Saturday 31, For a change, a cloudy overcast morning, which partly clears during the morning. Game wise much the same as Thursday except this time while sitting at hide
with Brian and Claire, one of the dehorned rhino comes into drink, special, followed by a herd of elephant come into drink and we enjoy some good viewing. On our way out,
impala coming down to drink at hide plus a kudu bull, lying up in the shade of a tree, more impala around nkhonkoni and we decide to head down the single pylons and we notice more and more vultures flying towards the sable dam area, after a scout around find dozens of them on the ground just west of Q’s corner on sable plains along molope
way, we also find 2 jackal feeding on a steenbok, no mistake as one of them has the bucks head, not sure whether they made the kill or something else did, cheetah maybe, we spend sometime searching the whole area, no luck.
That’s it for this month, You all take care now. R&T, N&M.🐘🐘🐘
